Fiber Technology Today for A/V Systems - Part 1 By John Lopinto Decades ago, the idea of sending audio, video, voice and data through a glass fiber instead of a copper wire was the dream of every communications engineer. It was obvious to those who understood fiber optic technology at the time that fiber had many technical and potential economic advantages over copper wire for transmitting these signals. Although the advantages were obvious at the time, the technology was not equal to the requirements of the A/V market and the costs were prohibitive for most all applications. ...Read More »

Change Your Commission Structure, Fast! By Gary Kayye, CTS Change your commission structure. Think about it. The Sales Department has not been the most profitable part of the average ProAV dealer in years. In fact, it's not even the second most profitable department. In most cases it's dead last, after rental, service, design/engineering and installation. So, all the "customer service" or labor service-related departments are more profitable than sales. Don't believe it? Figure it out for yourself. ...Read More »

The Convergence of HomeAV and ProAV By Gary Kayye, CTS There is an emerging trend that many of you have already noticed. It's the convergence of the HomeAV market and the ProAV market. For example, hasn't it become a lot easier to tell your neighbors what you do for a living? HDTV and the need for higher resolution displays in the home have driven the trend. In fact, more plasmas have been sold into the home than through the ProAV distribution channel. ...Read More »
Like I Said, Get into Service By Gary Kayye, CTS Virtually everyone has been predicting that a time will come when we will no longer be able to make money selling most ProAV products without selling services along with them. Most of us felt comfortable that that time was still a few years off in the future. But, after InfoComm 2004, it's clear to me that that time is here. ...Read More »
AV Hall of Fame: Alan C. Brawn By Gary Kayye, CTS Alan Brawn started life in Wood River, Illinois: Population 11,000. The small town, 25 miles east of St. Louis, offered a classic 1950?s style upbringing, says Brawn, with three oil refineries employing most of the adults and sports occupying the time of much of the youth. ...Read More »

By Gary Kayye, CTS Attendance was up over 22,000, booths were packed, new product introductions were everywhere and the special events such as the Projection Summit, EduComm and the Digital Cinema Forum were packed! At infoComm, Focus on Education By Gary Kayye, CTS Forget about the exhibits. Don't plan your infoComm experience backwards. Most people attending infoComm plan their show experience around the exhibits and their ability to peruse the show floor and see all the manufacturers they need to see. Then, depending on the appointments they make and the meetings they attend in the booth they determine the leftover time slots for taking in a course or two through infoComm's extensive show educational offerings. ...Read More »
D-Class Amplifiers: Small Size, Lower Power, Big Sound By Gordon Moore Some industry experts have said that in the coming years, technical advances will be coming to us not from the professional world but more from the consumer world. In effect, the early adopters (in their higher numbers in consumer products) will help fund the research and development that used to lie in the realm of professional products. The phenomenon holds particularly true in the field of audio. Case in point: D-Class amplifiers. ...Read More »
ProAV Industry Leader Russ McDonald Dies By Gary Kayye, CTS These are the worst kind of announcements to have to make. The ProAV market has lost another great man. Russ McDonald died at his home on Saturday (1/24/04) at the age of 55. Although currently a member of Clarity's Regional Management Team, Russ is best known for his 15-year tenure with Christie Digital (formerly Electrohome, Ltd.). InfoComm 2004: A Chili Cook-Off? By Gary Kayye, CTS I recently had dinner with Jason McGraw of ICIA. Jason is ICIA's Senior VP of Expositions and is most famous for organizing the ProAV market's premier trade show, InfoComm. We had a great meeting and he shared with me some of the exciting new plans for both the upcoming InfoComm 2004 in Atlanta, GA, to be held June 9-11, 2004 and the ISE show in Geneva, Switzerland, February 2-5, 2004. It is clear to me that both of these shows will help lead our industry into the AV/IT Convergence. ...Read More »

Hey, All Those Wireless Naysayers, Say Yea! By Gary Kayye, CTS Everyone knows that I have been a proponent of the integration and convergence of the IT and AV worlds. There's no question that networked systems are on the horizon for everyone, not just the university community who has quickly embraced it so far. In fact, the simple network monitoring features such as managing projector lamp hours, theft prevention and even controlling AV gear across a network, have caught on so rapidly that just about every projector manufacturer has jumped on the network bandwagon. ...Read More »

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
