1. Popular Science Awards "Best of What's New" to Home Entertainment Advances
Genoa, Akimbo, Texas Instruments, Kaleidescape, Sonos, InFocus, Microsoft and Sony all won "Best of What's New" in home entertainment awards from Popular Science.
Genoa took the grand prize in the category for its ColorPeak technology, which increases the color of plasma, LCD or projection TVs to more than one trillion colors versus the typical 16.77 million.
Akimbo won for its Internet TV, Kaleidescape for its incredible movie jukebox, and Sonos for its digital Wi-Fi music distribution system.
InFocus was recognized for its 61-inch DLP TV (just a bit over 6 inches deep). And speaking of Texas Instruments, TI was awarded for its wobulation technology which increases the resolution of its DLP chips (actually, it was a development collaboration between HP and TI). This technology will eventually make its way into DLP projectors and significantly improve perceived image resolution. We saw this in action at HP a year ago and were thoroughly impressed.
Microsoft won for its Windows Media Video 9 HD, which delivers HD-quality MPEG-2 video in one third the current file size, and Sony for its digital infrared audio transmission allowing wireless rear channels, and black screen technology, a coating for screens allowing better images from front projection even in high ambient light.
There are few technology awards that surpass "Best of What's New" from Popular Science. Congratulations to the winners!
2. Mitsubishi Introduces High Contrast DLP Home Projector
Mitsubishi has a new DLP projector specified at 4000:1 contrast ratio, 1500 ANSI lumens of brightness, and priced under $3,000. The Mitsubishi Home Cinema HC900U projector incorporates the company's CineRich Color, a white enhancement control technology, CineView video processing, and CineFocus aperture control for automatically increasing black and contract levels.
